Network on sheep and goats

Objectives

To study and improve the sheep and goat production systems in the Mediterranean Region.

Origin

Since 1970, IAMZ activities have been concerned with the characterization and improvement of local Mediterranean breeds, the study of carcasses and the study and improvement of feeding systems. During the eighties and at the beginning of the nineties, part of these activities was carried out in collaboration with the AGRIMED programme of the DG VI of the European Commission.

During the period 1990-1996, research projects were financed within the framework of the CAMAR and AIR programmes of the European Commission.

Since 1992, co-operation between the FAO Network of co-operative research on sheep and goats (FAO-REU), created in 1979. Growing collaboration with FAO-RNE (North Africa and the Middle East)

In 1996, the collaboration between the three entities (FAO-REU, FAO-RNE and CIHEAM) became official upon the signature of an agreement to create a joint Network. This Network is one of the networks of the European System of Cooperative Research Networks in Agriculture (ESCORENA). The Network collaborates actively with other international networks and institutions as EAAP, the RME network (Réseau Méditerranée Élevage) and IDF.

Present Designation

Inter-regional FAO/CIHEAM Network for Research and Development in Sheep and Goats

Type of Action

  • Exchange of information
  • Organisation of periodic meetings and seminars (every two or three years)
  • Working groups with common methodologies
  • Research projects
  • Technical stays and support to researchers for the participation in scientific events
  • Training

Results and Impact

The results of the activities carried out within the framework of the Network on Sheep and Goat and range from the more or less formal exchange of information to the development of large-scale research projects, as well as formal meetings and seminars and a large number of publications. Moreover, almost all the researchers working in small ruminants or pastures and forage crops in the Mediterranean Region participate in this network. There is also a very strong participation of experts from anglo-saxon or northern European countries, which ensures a very good connection with the European research centres. It is also worth pointing out that the activities are very well structured around the Networks or the Working Groups, whose names provide an accurate idea of the themes and subjects addressed by the Network.

The impact of the Network can be measured not only by the research activities of the participating teams, but also in the development activities of the Mediterranean countries since almost all the large development bodies of the Mediterranean interested in small ruminants participate actively in this Network.
