Network on legume and cereals

Objectives

The objective of this network is the periodical exchange of information and research results on quality criteria and adaptation of these crops of fundamental importance in the Mediterranean. Activities have been developed since 1990 through congresses and seminars with participation from over 150 experts from 19 countries. The activities are carried out jointly with the CIMMYT and the ICARDA.

Another objective of this network is to evaluate and adapt to the Mediterranean conditions technologies such as non tillage developped in other geographical areas. The activities are carried out jointly with ICARDA and FERT-RCM. EC founded projects have been related to the activity of this network: MABDE (2003-2007) and CONPAB (2005) projects dealt with the adaptation of cereal crops to dry conditions in Mediterranean areas. study of Mediterranean cropping systems has been addressed through the MEDRATE project (1998-2003), and the efficiency of water and nitrogen use in wheat and barley was the focus of the WatNitMED project (205-2009).

Origin

CIHEAM activity in grain legumes (chickpeas and faba bean) since the 1980s. Activities in durum wheat since 1990. All these activities are carried out in collaboration with CIMMYT and ICARDA.

The Mediterranean Workshops on No-tillage held in Settat-Morocco in 2001, Tabarka-Tunisia in 2004, Zaragoza in 2006 and Sétif-Algeria in 2010, and the training course on Recent trends in conservation agriculture under Mediterranean conditions. These activities have been jointly organised with FERT-RCM and ICARDA.
